Holistic Career and Professional Advising
The Student Center for Science Engagement offers holistic advising on a number of topics related to advancing students towards their professional goals. We take a holistic approach to better understand our students as whole individuals. Whether you are at the start of your academic career, or ready to advance to the next steps in a STEM pathway, the SCSE advisors are available to meet and discuss how you can succeed.
Below are some topics our advisors frequently work on collaboratively with NEIU STEM students.
- Determining interests in STEM and defining steps in career pathways to achieve goals
- Discussing if graduate school is right for you and how to approach graduate admissions processes
- Identifying barriers to student success and problem-solving or providing resources through the SCSE
- Directing students to resources across campus
- Drafting and revising personal statements and resumes
- Searching and applying for internships and jobs
- Preparing for interviews
In addition to the topics above, our holistic advising perspective allows for individualized assistance and discussions that cover a broad range of subjects relating to our mission to further the sense of belonging and success of students in STEM fields. When in doubt, students are encouraged to attend an advising appointment or contact advisors by email to discuss how to get needs met through our office or by direction to other offices and resources for NEIU students and the broader Chicago-area community.
Advisors are available year-round by appointment between 9am-5pm Monday-Friday. Students may meet with advisors in the SCSE office that adjoins the student room in BBH 235 or by zoom or phone call.
