Internships and Job Opportunities

An internship is a short term, hands on work experience that connects what you are learning in school with real world practice in your field of interest.

  • Practical Experience
Internships allow you to apply classroom knowledge to real job tasks, giving you a clearer picture of what working in that career is actually like.

  • Skill Development
You will build both technical skills related to your major or industry and professional skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem solving.

  • Professional Connections
Internships provide the chance to meet and learn from professionals in your field, which can help with mentorship, references, and future job opportunities.

  • Exploration
They give you the opportunity to explore a career path to see if it is the right fit for you before making a long term commitment.

  • Compensation
Some internships are paid, while others may be unpaid or offered for academic credit, depending on the employer and industry.

In short, an internship bridges the gap between being a student and becoming a professional. It is one of the most valuable steps you can take toward your career goals.

Timing of your Search
Tools for your Search
  • Start early by researching internship deadlines at least one semester before you plan to intern. Many competitive programs open applications months in advance.

  • Career Services and Job Boards such as Handshake, Indeed, LinkedIn, and the CBT Career Development page for updated internship listings.

  • Pay attention to peak recruiting seasons such as fall and early spring, when most employers post internship opportunities.

  • Networking Resources like career fairs, student clubs, alumni connections, and professional associations help you discover opportunities that may not be posted online.

  • Create a timeline for updating your resume, connecting with career services, and applying to multiple positions before deadlines arrive.

  • Application Materials including a polished resume, tailored cover letter, and a strong LinkedIn profile ensure you are ready to apply when opportunities arise.
