The (NITMB) has named �ڰ������� Associate Professor of Mathematics Joseph Hibdon Jr., Ph.D., as the inaugural Rotating Associate Director for Convening Programs.

“NITMB is a national institute that promotes the type of interdisciplinary research that is done at NEIU just naturally,” Dr. Hibdon said. “I believe that NITMB can learn a lot from the people of NEIU and that NEIU has a great opportunity to develop a larger network for NEIU students and faculty to do research with.”

Dr. Hibdon was first hired at �ڰ������� as an advisor for the Student Center for Science Engagement (SCSE) in February 2011. He became a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics in August 2013.

“This new role allows me to connect students, faculty and staff at NEIU with all the opportunities at NITMB,” Dr. Hibdon said. “For example, if there are workshops coming up that are related to the interests of people at NEIU I make sure to talk directly with those people and to use the resources of NEIU, such as the SCSE, to share the information.”

The mission of NITMB is to inspire mathematical discoveries and transform the practice of biological research through an interdisciplinary approach to the fields. It is supported by a partnership between Northwestern University and The University of Chicago.

Per a about Dr. Hibdon’s appointment, his role will include efforts to “enhance NITMB’s convening programs, which include workshops, collaborative meetings, and interdisciplinary research programs designed to bring together leading minds in biology, mathematics, and related fields.”

Dr. Hibdon earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics, with a minor in Chemistry from College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. He went on to earn both his Master of Science and doctoral degree in Mathematics from Northwestern University.

“It is important that the immense resources of NITMB are open to all, including those at NEIU and other similar types of regional universities,” Dr. Hibdon said. “More importantly, having someone making decisions and supporting NITMB who also has the experience of working at a place like NEIU and engaging with our amazing student population — one that might not typically be represented — is an honor. I look forward to working with the staff at NITMB and engaging more people — both students and researchers — in the development of new scientific discoveries.”
